JOHN J. NESBITT, INC.
A NESBITT "UNIVERSAL UNIT" PLAQUE FROM THE FAMOUS STEEL PIER ca. 1930
SOMETIME AROUND 1930 THE NESBITT COMPANY INSTALLED ITS UNIVERSAL UNITS ON "AMERICA'S  FAMOUS STEEL PIER" IN ATLANTIC CITY.  OBVIOUSLY PROUD OF THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND AWARE OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS VALUE OF THE EXPOSURE OF THESE NESBITT UNITS TO THE MANY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THE PIER ATTRACTED EACH YEAR, THESE SPECIAL BRASS PLAQUES WERE AFFIXED PROMINENTLY TO THE FRONT OF THE NESBITT UNIT VENTILATORS.

TYPICAL OF NESBITT'S HIGH STANDARD OF QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE, THE STEEL PIER UNITS CONTINUED IN OPERATION FOR MANY DECADES.  ONLY AFTER THE DISASTEROUS FIRE THAT DESTROYED MUCH OF THE STEEL PIER WERE THESE UNITS PULLED OUT TO BE SOLD AS SCRAP.

JOHN F. MCELGIN, SON OF ELIZABETH AND JOHN J. NESBITT'S DAUGHTER ELIZABETH AND HER HUSBAND JOH N MCELGIN, WHO SERVED FOR MANY YEARS AS THE NESBITT COMPANY'S CHIEF ENGINEER,  BOUGHT THE UNITS AND HAD THE  PLAQUES  REFERBISHED.  HE THEN DISTRIBUTED THE PLAQUES TO HIS NESBITT RELATIVES FOR WHICH HIS COUSINS ARE MOST APPRECIATIVE.
