THE BEGINNING YEARS - 1912 TO 1920
IN 1912 JOHN J. NESBITT INSTALLED, AS A CONTRACTOR, A COMPLETE UNIT VENTILATOR SYSTEM IN THE MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ATLANTIC CITY , NJ.  THE UNIT VENTILATORS USED THEN WERE MANUFACTURED BY THE MONARCH UNIT VENTILATOR COMPANY OF NEW YORK, THIS COMPANY BEING THE ORIGINATOR AND PIONEER IN THE FIELD OF UNIT VENTILATION.

WITH A VIEW TO PROVIDING A BUSINESS THAT HIS SONS MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN AND HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR, JOHN J. NESBITT OPENED A SHOP IN PHILADELPHIA IN 1913, ADDING TO HIS PLUMBING AND HEATING FACILITIES A SHEET METAL WORKING FACILITY.

THE MONARCH UNIT VENTILATOR COMPANY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS IN 1916.  ABOUT THIS TIME, SON ALBERT JOINED THE BUSINESS AND ASSISTED HIS FATHER TO DEVELOP THE FIRST NESBITT SCHOOLHOUSE UNIT VENTILATOR. PICTURED HERE IS THE FIRST NESBITT UNIT VENTILATOR FROM THIS ERA.
FIRST NESBITT UNIT VENTILATOR
THE SHEET METAL FACILITIES OF THE NESBITT COMPANY WERE STILL LOCATED IN PHILADELPHIA WHEN THE FIRST NESBITT UNIT VENTILATOR WAS MANUFACTURED.  1917 WAS A PIVOTAL YEAR FOR THE BUSINESS.  THE CONTRACTING BUSINESS WAS GIVEN UP THAT YEAR TO GIVE FULL ATTENTION TO THE MANUFACTURE OF UNIT VENTILATOR EQUIPMENT, AND THE SHEET METAL FACILITIES WERE MOVED FROM PHILADELPHIA TO ATLANTIC CITY.  ALSO, IN AUGUST OF THAT YEAR THE FIRST NESBITT SYNCRETIZER UNIT VENTILATOR WAS OFFICIALLY APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION OF THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY.  THIS APPROVAL TOOK PLACE AFTER A TEST OF THE PRODUCT, PICTURED HERE, IN THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL, PLEASANTVILLE, NJ.
